WP2 – Data Management and new measurement

Overview

Objectives: To ensure efficient development, implementation, oversight and updating of the Data Management Plan (DMP). This includes: (i) Building up a quality-controlled input dataset for DTO models, including OWF information. (ii) Collecting data produced in WP5. (iii) Gathering environmental and biological data provided by the industry. (iv) Acquiring new observations.

(Lead: SINDBAD)

Tasks

The WP2 is divided into four main tasks:

The project focuses on providing a state-of-the-art present-day baseline for a reanalysis period (2010–2020) and evaluating the combined impact of OWF development and climate change by comparing historical (2010–2020) and mid-century (2040–2050) climates. This task will facilitate data flow such that models and methods used in WP3–WP5 will have access to atmospheric forcing and boundary conditions (NORA3 reanalysis, DestinE Climate DT historical and SSP3–7.0), turbine information on existing and planned OWFs (EMODnet, Vattenfall), and satellite and in-situ data for validation and assimilation.

Historical and real-time in situ observations of oceanographic conditions at Vattenfall's OWFs in the North and Baltic Seas will be provided for the project. Similar data will also be sought from other major OWE companies. Real-time in situ observations will be gathered from sources such as sailing activities (The Ocean Race, Sailing4Science) and diving operations (e.g., SSI–Scuba Schools International), using cost-effective sensors in the North and Baltic Seas. Efforts will ensure data readiness for scientific use, including quality checks, cross-platform validation, and error estimation.

Observational data will be collected from new data sources including in situ platforms (e.g., gliders, new cost-effective profilers, drifters, and fixed-point recorders; also citizen observations) and remote sensing (SMOS salinity, next-generation altimetry, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), ocean color, and bathymetry). All data will be consolidated into a dataset supporting sub-regional DTO development, to be made available through Task 2.4.

The Data Management Plan (DMP) will be established at the beginning of the project, aligned with Horizon Europe Open Research Policy, to guide data quality and protection, ensuring compliance with FAIR principles and Open Science. It emphasizes data accessibility under Creative Commons (CC-BY) where possible and addresses intellectual property with an “as open as possible, as closed as necessary” approach. Data harvesting and catalog organization will be implemented via ERDDAP (including ncWMS) and GeoServer as core publishing platforms, offering interoperability with spatial planning and monitoring systems.
